QB
Sam Bradford—Okla—6’4”-236-Top 5—Best QB prospect in draft, ideal size, most accurate QB Ive seen come out in years maybe since Matt Leinart, which is a little worrying, Has enough arm strength, Will do well if the Rams install a similar offense to what he had at school, especially if they want him to start right away. Would be good in a shotgun 4 wide set and in fact, I cant believe im saying this, but I can see a little Peyton Manning in his game, not necessarily in his personality/intelligence/drive, but his spread em out throw quickly and accurately is right outta Peyton’s playbook
Jimmy Clausen—ND—6’3”-222—1st –Pro style offense at ND, plenty experience, plenty arm strength, throws a mean deep ball, could come in and start day 1 for Bills or Panthers, may slide/probably will, someone will trade up to get him around 22. I like him I think questions about his intangibles are being made by ppl who have never spoken with him, drafting QB’s sucks, but he has a good shot to make it if in the right system, I hope he winds up with Panthers or maybe even the Browns, Bills will make him a bust
Colt McCoy—Texas—6’1”-216—1st-2nd—Great college QB has tons of experience with 52 starts. A little short but that can be over criticized, showed athletic improvement in college and will continue to get stronger, ideally he’ll be put in a west coast system, I would love to see the Browns take him in the 2nd round and have Mike Holmgren tutor him to be very similar to Matt Hasselback
Tim Tebow—UF—6’3”-236—God only knows—Too much speculation around him, idk what to make of it but I think his delivery is too long and he doesn’t have the recognition or cognition ability to be an NFL QB, you can try him at wildcat or H-back but at the end of the day somebody is going to overdraft him
Dan Lefevour—Central Mich—6’3”-230—2nd to 3rd day—Intriguing prospect, very very productive in a poor conference, very very experienced. Throws like Mark Sanchez a little, accurate and catchable balls, good size and reasonable arm strength, worth a flier on day 3
Tony Pike—Cinci—6’6”-223—3rd day—Ideal size, looks the part, shared time in college and has a similar tale to Tom Brady but lets get one thing straight this guy is a back up, he can bulk up all he wants but he’s a backup if he remains in the NFL at all
Jarrett Brown—WVU—6’3”-224—3rd day—Great physical tools, was stuck behind Pat White for a long time and was productive his senior year. Great athleticism, good fluid throwing motion, looks like he has all the talent in the world, will need several years sitting behind somebody, would like to see him go to the Redskins and sit behind McNabb
Jevan Snead—Ole Miss—6’3”-219—3rd day—Major disappointment this year. Was touted as top 10 pick this year then choked then for some reason decided to come out anyway. Shoulda stayed in school another year and thus his Junior year performance will push him to the 3rd day and cost him millions and likely his career, good potential but wont reach it
Mike Kafka—Northwestern—6’3”-225—3rd day—Ideal back up to 3rd string quarterback, nothing more but the kind of guy who will get into a system and stay there for a while
Zac Robinson—Ok St—6’2”-214—3rd day—Ran the spread with Dez and company, good athleticism was a solid college QB but not an NFL type player, much better suited for Big 12 ball than NFL, though is a competitor and never count a competitor out
RB
C J Spiller—Clemson—5’11”-196—Early-mid 1st—Type of elite speed only seen every couple years. Closer to Chris Johnson than to Reggie Bush cuz of his straight line speed vs Bush’s lateral moves, will be a playmaker as runner, returner, and receiver. Would love to see Seatle pick him up at 6 or 14, will be a home-runner and is definitely a top 10 talent.
Ryan Mathews—Fresno St—6’0”-218—1st-2nd round—Exactly the running style that instantly translates to the NFL. Good size and speed, runs tough and balanced, broke a lot of long runs, reminds me of Thomas Jones a lot, absolute perfect fit for the chargers
Jahvid Best—Cal—5’10”-200—1st-2nd round—Speed speed speed, its all hes got but hes good with it. Type of speed where when he gets into a hole goes from 1st level to 3rd level in a hurry. Has gamebreaker ability and has potential to be a Jamal Charles type. Injury concerns but at 4.35 with his vision is well worth a 2nd rounder for a team needing a home run hitter like the Lions or Browns
Montario Hardesty—Tenn—6’0”-225—2nd day—Good receiving skills, lacks lateral movement quickness. Has great vision and instincts, good size and speed but not exceptional in either, Very good at planting and getting upfield in a hurry, runs with toughness balance and a little anger, I like him in a Correll Buckhalter way but with a little more of everything
Dexter McCluster—Ole Miss—5’9”-172—2nd Day—Tiny but very tough, much faster than his 4.58 indicates, has ability to house it everytime he touches it. Great receiving skills, just the kind of player you want the ball in his hands about 10-15 times a game, good value in the 3rd
Jonathan Dwyer—GT—6’0”-230—2nd day—NFL ready size, one of few big backs in draft, has good vision, room to either slim down or tone up, similar to many nfl rbs (jonathan stewart, shonn greene) but just barely slower, I’m not sold on him but he doesn’t take false steps which would kill him with his subpar speed
Charles Scott—LSU—5’11”-238—2nd-3rd day—Good runner at LSU, full speed at all times, always going north south, reminds me of Ryan Grant, Grant has higher top speed but Scott is bigger, same running style, could be a very effective RB in the right system, I like him for the Texans
Joe Mcknight—USC—5’11”-200—Tough to read, great lateral movement and agility, good not great speed, not a between tackles runner, natural at setting up blockers, will be very good at screens and draws, has tremendous 3rd down RB potential
Ben Tate—Auburn—5’11”-220—2nd-3rd day—Definitely a runner not a receiver, Surprisingly high top speed to go with his frame, not the vision of Hardesty but a higher top gear, interesting prospect who could have a little Ahmad Bradshaw in him, players like him reason this draft is so deep
Toby Gerhart—Stanford—6’0”-231—2nd day—You know exactly what your gonna get from him, tough hard nosed runner who fights for yardage and to stay on his feet, excels with shoulders squared and will be exactly whats expected: a good tough back picking up 3-5 yards a clip
Legarrett Blount—Oregon—6’0”-240—3rd day—Big dude, runs well for his size, obvious character issues, someone will give him a chance (Raiders) but is a big tough runner with obvious potential, will need to be in the right situation to make it work
James Starks—Buffalo—6’2”-218—3rd day—Missed entire 2009 season with injury but very productive for 2 previous years. Didn’t play best competition, but was successful when converting to rb in college. Stands a little tall but has solid speed in the low 4.5 range and could be a project worth undertaking.
Anthony Dixon—Miss St—6’1”-233—3rd day—Workhorse at MSU was focal point of their attack out of offense similar to WW high, nothing special but finishes runs with authority. Could be short yardage back, lacks balance that would put him in a Marion Barber-like category
Keith Toston—OKST—6’0”-213—3rd day—Good experienced shotgun running back, perfect for spread offenses, looks like Robert Smith type, a little quick, not fast by any means, good value for the spread, productive in college
Curtis Steele—Memphis—5’11”-194--3rd day—One quick burst, tenacious, good patience, prefers the bounce to the cutback, will need good o-line, worth a tryout, very productive in college
Stafon Johnson—USC—6’0”-200—3rd day to Undrafted—Reasonable talent, elusive good cutback and cut-up runner, might be able to be serviceable 3rd down back
Andre Dixon—Uconn—6’1”-205--3rd day to undrafted—runs upright, has vision and is good at squaring shoulders, needs size to improve power as that suits his running style, a one cut and north south kind of guy
Chris Brown—Okla—5’10”-210—3rd day to prob undrafted—nothing standing out and not in a travis henry way, nothing really to offer that’s exceptional kind of a derrick knight skill set, average
Roy Upchurch—Bama—6’0”-210—3rd day to undrafted—Inexperienced probably a special teamer but has some talent, runs straight up, not very elusive, has some 3rd down back value
Javarris James—Miami—6’0”-212—3rd day to undrafted—Edgerrin’s cousin, elusive but not quick enough, no indication he will be impact player
WR
Dez Bryant—Ok St—6’2”-225—1st—Top 3 prospect in draft, probably my favorite player in the draft. He has everything I want in #1 receiver, he’s fast (faster than 4.53) strong, runs routes well, in and outta breaks effectively, and most of all the best ball skills Ive seen in a long long time, like since Larry Fitzgerald, The man catches it with his hands downtown/short/in traffic/ or above traffic, his best comparison is definitely Brandon Marshall, I love Dez Bryant and fuck all the nay sayers cuz he is getting treated like Heck Randy Moss did in ’98 and he had the 2nd best rookie year ever (Earl Campbell #1)
Demaryius Thomas—GT—6’3”-224—1st-2nd—Long but strong frame, is perfect on the outside, vertical threat that will need to develop a mean comeback route, Not very polished but catches with his hands, rises over defenders and catches deep balls with dudes draped all over him. Could be Bernard Berrian but has potential to be Calvin Johnson but a little worse, either way would be a great WR at stretching the field and really requiring a safety paying attention at all times
Golden Tate—ND—5’11”-200—1st-prob 2nd—On film looks like the kind of guy who is uncanny at just getting open, Hines Ward like in that regard, Ran well at 4.42, I like that he was a high school running back, I like that he must’ve been reading defenses under Charlie Weis, Very intriguing prospect and I like him more than most do because I see a little Torry Holt in his game, Has chance to walk in and be a productive #2 right away for a team like Jaguars, Pats, great fit in Cleveland also
Brandon Lafell—LSU—6’2”-211—2nd day—I like him a lot, I feel he is the most under talked about receiver heading into this draft. I really cannot see him being a bust due to his size, athleticism, receiving skill, and production. Top 5 in school history in every major receiving category. He is experienced in the toughest conference in college ball and excelled. I think he has similar ability to a Greg Jennings or Sims-Walker. Could be a definite steal, or could simply become a Jabar Gaffney type, but will not be a Charles Rogers. Good pick for almost every system except Eagles, solid 2nd round selection.
Arrelious Benn—Illinois—6’1”-219—late 1st-2nd—Hated him when I watched him at the combine, he looked like a straight line speed guy who only got attention cuz he was big. After watching the film he is more straight line speed than a double move guy, but he plays physical takes hits and crosses the middle very effectively. Is type of player that will catch a lot of slants and shallow crosses and has the ability to split the safeties and pick up some good yardage. I think he is similar to a poor mans T.O. and would be a good 2nd round pick for a team looking for a #2 option, Jags?
Mardy Gilyard—Cinci—6’0”-187—2nd day—One of my favorite players in the draft, was homeless 4 years ago and worked his way outta debt to be the only playmaker on undefeated Cinci. He has above average speed, but is better with change of direction, will run a mean post-corner route. Excellent after the catch and had 4 return touchdowns. Was the focal point of his offense and everyone knew it but still had 11 touchdowns each of last 2 years. I love him as a guy how gets separation and will seemingly always be open and making plays. Solidly in 2nd round with Houshmazilli potential with better YAC
Damian Williams—USC—6’1”-197—2nd day—Plays very similarly to Mardy Gilyard, I like Gilyards intangibles better, but Williams has more of an NFL ready body. Has very good YAC and reasonable return ability, I like him in a spread system and has ability to be a 60 for 900 type guy, runs screens well, would be good addition for anybody in 2nd round especially Cardinals filling Boldin’s underneath ability
Eric Decker—Minn—6’3”-217—2nd day—Interesting prospect, highest wonderlick score at combine of any position, obviously intelligent and has tremendous hand eye and hands in general. Very productive in minn, scares me with his similarities with Brian Robiskee. The difference is he was the man at Minn and still got open and has really great hands. Will need to get the ball immediately outta breaks cuz he will only be open for a brief second due to his below average speed, not great upside, but could be a good addition as a #2 on the outside.
Dezmon Briscoe—Kansas—6’3”-207—2nd day—Long guy who set all receiving records at Kansas in only 3 years. Not real fast, definitely not a separator, not really one for catching in traffic, will be shut down by most man to man matchups. Against zone though he will find creases give a big target and surprising after the catch ability. He looks like Kenny Britt but with a lack of speed, Nate Burleson possible comparison, I think he could give real good value in 3rd round, Seahawks?
Jordan Shipley—Texas—5’11”-193—2nd day—After a stellar 17 year college career at Texas the Wes Welker comparison enters the NFL. Not the change of direction Wesley has, or the athleticism of Percy Harvin, what Shipley does have are top 3 hands in the draft. More athletic than expected for a white middle aged man, and gives terrific effort, I’m hesitant to call him a taller Wesley because he played on a very talented team with the winningest qb in college fball history in the most spread of the spread offenses. He will get a chance in the 3rd round, but I think ppl are too quick to anoint him and may end up being lucky to be a Brandon Stokley type.
Emmanuel Sanders—SMU—5’11”-186—3rd day—Nice little prospect, kind of rangy but has nice toughness and good speed. 4.4 40 and good receiving skills, experience in the spread which is nice for spread teams but will likely drive down his draft stock. He has a real love for the game and I believe he is a great addition to most teams especially those needing depth, a Mike Wallace or Johnny Knox type player that could be a good fit for Pats.
Riley Cooper—Florida—6’3”-222-2nd-3rd day—Tebow’s favorite target because he has big frame and good hands, will draw comparisons to other large white slow dudes, but from what Ive seen will not be able to fulfill a Joe Jurivicious career. Is different from Decker in that he is a catch in traffic guy more than a separator, is physical and plays with an edge which is nice, but like Decker may have to revert to his baseball options because neither will make a name on special teams
Mike Williams—Syracuse—6’1”-221--??3rd day prob—This guy rivals Maurice Clarett for character concerns, suspended all of 2008 and then quit halfway thru 2009. On the field he has #1 wideout potential goes up and gets in, catches in traffic, has deep threat ability tho not exceptional speed. Very interesting talent but would be a stunner if he fulfilled potential look for someone to take a flier on him late or possibly earlier than anticipated in the 3rd
David Reed—Utah—6’0”-191—3rd day—Good playing speed, looks awful skinny. Spread offense will hurt his draft position, but he has ability. Looks like Reche Caldwell or Jabar Gaffney but will need time in order to develop Gaffney’s receiving knack, will be worth a mid-round pick prob 5th
Taylor Price—Ohio—6’0”-205—3rd day—Has good burst and clocked at 4.41, but was never really productive up to his talents standards. Will be a project for some team but the fact of the matter is he wasn’t productive enough in a crappy conference and doesn’t have enough physical tools (3 inches, .05 in 40) in order to really make it, I believe he will never pan out.
Jacoby Ford—Clemson—5’9”-186—3rd day—Speed! That’s all he’s got. On tape not as fast as the stopwatch. Do not get him confused with C.J. Spillers game breaking ability because though Ford is fast he aint gonna take it to the house all the time. Does not make as many people miss as you would like which is why not a true punt returner. I will be surprised if he doesn’t end up a raider but he wont live up to a 4.28 at the combine.
Freddie Barnes—Bowling Green—6’0”-210—undrafted—155 catches in 13 games as a senior, need I say more? Ran a 4.67 but has the knack to get open the way Davone Bess does, also undrafted FA, could be worth a flier in the 7th, what does he have in common with Wes Welker and Jerry Rice? 40 in the 4.6’s
TE
Jermaine Gresham—Okla—6’5”-261—1st—I believe the best TE prospect in a while and that means like since Vernon Davis. If he came out last year likely would have been top 15 pick. The season ending meniscus injury sucks especially because those keep being a bitch for the rest of your career, but he will be a quarterbacks best friend at 6’5” with separation type athleticism. Tremendous after the catch with physicality and in the red zone. Reasonable blocker but Dan Graham was same way when he came out. Played in spread scheme in a 3-point stance as well as in a slot position, I believe he could be a great fit in a pats uni or in a Saints type system, but less so in a running offense like Cinci
Rob Gronkowski—Zona—6’6”-264—2nd round—All the talent you could want from a 6’6” white kid. Season ending back injury in 2009 sucks especially with its nerve damage. The guy has all the tools and can play much the same game Gresham can. Love how he whips his head around to look back to the qb which reminds me of Dallas Clark. Nerve damage scares me, but for a 2nd round pick his potential and versatility (could play in really and system) is very tempting and could be worthwhile for Bungals.
Ed Dickson—Oregon—6’4”-249—2nd day—He’s long, athletic, and has terrific receiving skills. Will need to add size in NFL but that’s not really a problem. Has what it takes to be a real receiving threat in the pro’s especially from a slot position, will need to study up big time to transfer from Oregon’s spread attack though. Athletic enough he was often a screen target. I like him a lot
Aaron Hernandez—Florida—6’2”-245—2nd day—Very athletic player, better blocker than expected but is still very much a receiving te. Won Mackey Award and was 1st team all American in 2009. A little short and will likely have to play a Chris Cooley or Bo Scaife type role which will prob put him in the 3rd round, but his athleticism and pure receiving skills will make him a difficult downfield matchup for LBs
Dennis Pitta—BYU—6’4”-245—2nd-3rd day—Will be a value pick, guy is coming out with natural receiving instincts combined with 5 years of college fball experience. I like him a lot and think he could be the sleeper of the bunch comin out as a 4th round possibility, nice fit for pats, comparable skills to Owen Daniels
Anthony McCoy—USC—6’4”-259—2nd-3rd day—Tested positive for mary jane at combine which will drive his draft stock down, aside from that I believe him to be the most overrated prospect at TE position this year. He does not have great athleticism or receiving feel. I believe he was an adequate college te in a dominant program who will not be able to transition favorably to the NFL. To make a place for himself I think he will need to put on another 10 pounds and focus on blocking.
Dorin Dickerson—Pitt—6’4”-226—3rd day—got ppl’s attention at combine when he blew away other TEs in the 40, but then ppl realized he weighs as much as Dez Bryant, wont be able to transition that game in NFL and will likely see his Pitt teammate Nate Byham getting more time by being a solid blocking TE
Garrett Graham—Wisconsin—6’3”-243—3rd day—Poor mans Aaron Hernandez, pretty small, will be lined up as H-back if he is lucky to make a team. Could provide depth and receiving skill to a TE group but will not be a real good player at the next level
Jimmy Graham—Miami—6’6”-260—3rd day—Everyone wants the next basketball player turned TE, well this guy has more potential than anyone, at 6’6” he’s big, after 2 years on Miami bball team he’s athletic enough. The problem is he only played 1 year of football and unfortunately wasn’t all that productive, regardless somebody is gonna take him (might reach) and they’ll be interested in what he could become.
T
Russell Okung—Ok St—6’5”-307—top 5—Easily the safest pick at the position. This guy has the length and athleticism to play LT in the NFL. Williams and Davis have more upside but Okung will be a stalwart at LT for a while. Doesn’t look pretty when he moves but he moves well and will be able to hold up good pass rushers. Will likely not be an elite LT but he also will not be a bust. Look for him to be the first one off the board for that reason, btw wicked long arms
Anthony Davis—Rutgers--6’5”-323—top 20—Somebody I think people will look back on and wonder why a few OT’s came off the board before him. Yes he has had some off the field issues, but this guys talent is undeniable. He’s the biggest elite LT prospect in the draft and probably has the best feet too. The man has the ability to line up any rusher and simply neutralize him. He isn’t as mean in the run game as I would like, but his size and athletic ability will at least allow him to be a shield blocker. One of those guys I wanna know how good he’s gonna be in 3 years
Trent Williams—Okla--6’5”-315—top 15—Played both T spots in college but mostly RT. People seem to be very high on him but I feel he is a bit of a projection at LT. The meanest of the top T’s and no coincidence is the best run blocker. I believe this is also a trait reserved more for RT’s. He will go top 10 and I think that’s a bit high to draft a RT especially since ppl think he is gonna be a LT
Bryan Bulaga—Iowa--6’5”-314—top 20—He jumped off the screen to me at the combine. He executed all the drills with precision and looked to never be leaning or unbalanced in anyway. The tape looks pretty different though, Brandon Graham lit him up pretty good. I believe he will find a home at RT, his arms are a little short and his backpedal a little too slow for LT, but he will not be a bust, this guy will starting in the NFL for 10 years and will be productive
Charles Brown—USC—6’5”-303—late 1st-2nd—Hated him when I watched him at the combine, felt his hips were stiff and technique was weak, but watching the film he looks great. Great footwork in pass protection, the ex-TE has plenty of athletic ability. First team All-american and Morris trophy winner for best o-lineman in college, the man can flat out play and I think he is a tremendous pick in the 20’s, he’d look nice in Green and yellow to the cheeseheads, reminds me of Jason Smith without run blocking mean streak
Rodger Saffold—Indiana—6’4”-316—late 1st-2nd—Some people think he might go at the end of the 1st but that would be an absolute reach. He is definitely a RT and anyone who drafts him as a LT will be disappointed and will have to spend more money and another 1st rounder on a true LT. As a right tackle though he is a terrific player, isn’t gonna shock and awe but hes the type of player whose name youll never hear during the game which means he’s quietly getting his job done, I like him in the 2nd like Eben Britton last year
Bruce Campbell—Maryland—6’6”-314—2nd day—Everyone saw him at the combine with his 4.8 speed and 30 reps but the fact of the matter is he is a middle round prospect at best. He is a big time project if you wanna plug him in at LT and will take at least a year. He looks lost a lot of the time and even though his technique looks great in gym shorts it looks shitty on the tape. Somebody is gonna take him too high and if the Raiders do at 8 I will literally shit myself laughing
Vlad Ducasse—Umass—6’4”-332—Very very raw, people love his measurables and the athleticism he achieves with them. Better run blocker than pass protector (Brandon Graham made him look silly at the Senior Bowl) he has the size to be a mauler which is why he might end up at guard. Plays on his toes in pass protection and is the type of prospect that wont play for at least a year. Has the size the Cowboys like, but is a project so they might not be up to it
Tony Washington—Albilene Christian—6’6”-310—mid rounds—Loved him at the combine, thought he was the most athletic guy I saw, and his balance was terrific. He is a bit of a project, but if he weren’t with his measurable he’d be a top 15 pick. Btw he may have banged his sister, but does that make him a bad blocker?
G/C
Mike Iupati—Idaho—6’5”-331—1st—Has the best quality in a guard, anger. Guy plays mean, he has a chip on his shoulder and likes to hit people to prove he belonged at USC and not Idaho. Reminds me of Logan Mankins in that they played in the same conference and have similar mentalities. He needs some refining especially in the holding department, but he has the chance to be in the same sentence with Alan Faneca and Mankins and that means pro bowls. Best punch in the draft
Maurkice Pouncey—Florida—6’4”-304—1st—Most athletic interior OL in draft. Has the rare ability to snap and pull. Quick feet, agility, and is very strong in the upper body. Starred in the SEC against 1st round quality nose tackles Terrence Cody and Dan Williams, and made the calls at the line for the Best College fball team over the past 3 years. He comes in starts day one and you forget about the position, best center prospect to come out since Nick Mangold
Jon Asamoah—Illinois—6’4”-305—2nd day—Good solid player. Isn’t gonna wow people with a lotta pancakes but is very effective and pretty athletic to go with that. He will be a solid pulling guard and is able to shield defenders in the run game. Plays a little too much over his toes in pass protection, but is near the best in this draft class at the guard position
John Jerry—Ole Miss—6’5”-328—mid rounder—Played a little as tackle in college cuz of his height, but will need to push inside to guard in the pros. Will need work and will need to trim a little, but has good size and strength. Brother Peria Jerry went in 1st round last year as DT so he has blood lines of athleticism.
Matt Tennant—BC—6’5”-300—3rd day—Will be a steal for someone as he has the ability to start in the pros, remember Dan Koppen in the 5th Tennant has the same type ability
4-3 DE
Derrick Morgan—GT—6’3”-263—Top 20—Pure football player, another guy that is pretty much a sure bet. You know youre gonna get 100% effort and some pretty effective pass rushing skills. This guy plays the run he gets after the qb he does it all. ACC defensive player of the year who some think would be a top 5 pick if there weren’t so many DT’s and 3-4 defenses
Brandon Graham—Mich—6’2”—270—1st—Yes he is short with little T-Rex arms but this guy tears lineman apart. I want to see him up against a Ryan Clady or a Joe Thomas because I don’t think he would fare well but I hope he would prove me wrong. This best pass rush moves in the draft without question. I think he could be most effective in a 3-4 with an Elvis Dumervil role, but I believe he can be successful in the right 4-3 scheme which I hope is Atlanta across from John Abraham.
Jason Pierre-Paul—USF—6’5”-270—1st—Doesn’t he just look like a DE. Long limbed with great motor and athleticism, I think he is the guy most suited to be a bust in this draft. Ppl compare him to Jevon Kearse say hes a freak, but I just don’t see expending a 1st round pick on a guy with 7 career college starts, scariest player on the draft board in terms of taking him or passing on him
Everson Griffen—USC—6’3”-273—1st or 2nd—The mans an athlete. He just looks like a tenacious pass rusher to me, he shows tremendous speed and agility. The type of guy you can plug in right away on passing downs and get 8-10 sacks as a rookie. He is raw and in order to fulfill his potential he will have to take time to develop more pass moves and learn the game better. He may be better at 3-4 OLB but if that’s where he goes don’t expect him to drop in coverage much, this guy was built to chase the ball, but needs to show that on the field, could be a Merriman type but could be a bust too, Terrell Suggs body not production though
Carlos Dunlap—Florida—6’6”-270—2nd –All the measurables you could ever want in a 4-3 DE, he even got a lotta time at a great school against great competition. Problem is the guy didn’t produce. He has a low motor and disappears a lot. Played incredible against Okla in 2008 national champ game but your average week the guy don’t show. Somebody is gonna reach for this guy and be disappointed. Last 2 great DE’s from FL were Alex Brown and Derrick Harvey, never draft gators!!
Corey Wootton—Northwestern—6’6”-270—2nd day—Stellar year in 2008 but injuries held him down a bit in 2009. Has frame for 3-4 end in a Seymour kinda way, but he is 30 pounds away from that, even so he should put on 10 pounds to play 4-3 strong side end. Not a great pass rusher, but has some speed and his long arms allow his to disengage. Probably more of a run stopper especially after he bulks up
George Selvie—USF—6’3”-253—3rd day—Possibly the most productive pass rusher in the nation in his time at USF, all the guy did was get to the qb in college. Along with Brandon Graham has terrific pass rush skills, and comes out as a polished rusher who has gotten lost in the hype amongst his USF defense teammates. He was their best player by far and he deserves to get a shot and I think he might be able to pull something off
Brandon Lang—Troy—6’3”-266—3rd day—Will draw plenty of comparisons to Demarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora just cuz of where he went to school, but don’t jump to conclusions. He has some skill but I don’t see anything that resembles the athleticism that past Trojans have had, he could make it but not in a dominant role
Jarvis Geathers—UCF—6’2”-238—Undrafted—Natural pass rusher, very good burst off the line, is better in a 3-point stance than standing up, in Robert Mathis role but is long shot to achieve that much.
3-4 DE
Jared Odrick—PSU—6’5”-300—1st—The only pure 3-4 DE prospect in draft, is long and strong. He is a great fit and I really like him. Likes his swim move in the pass rush but might have to be more of a bull rusher-rip man in a 3-4 scheme. Real strong against the run, will need to work on playing with better leverage as he stands up a little too much, but he is a truly talented prospect who would be an ideal patriot.
Al Woods—LSU—6’4”-309—2nd day—Only started one year but with 36” arms he can hold off Minute Bol, Has def potential at this spot and real ideal body size. Massive strong hands can really control people, doesn’t have great speed or quickness but you aint gonna ask him to do any of that. He is a project and will require some serious coaching but again he’s got things you cant teach and really could be a tremendous strong side DE in a 3-4 with the proper progression, Seymour/Aaron Smith type, oh and btw had a 37” vertical at the Indianapolis Kennel Show
Tyson Alualu—Cal—6’3”-295—2nd day—Played in a 3-4 scheme in college which will make ppl think about him to quickly fill a need area. Not as long as can be hoped for especially in the arm department, but he is absolutely and effort player. I believe on day 2 this is the type of guy who can be a #2 DE in a 3-4 scheme
Corey Wootton—Northwestern—6’6”-270—2nd day—As stated above he is a long and strong player, I think he would really be a terrific 3-4 end if he were able to keep most of his athleticism and play at 300-310. A real good player who could be a steal on day 2 if given time to develop in a Seymour clone
Alex Carrington—Ak St—6’5-285—3rd day—Has the measurables for DE another guy that needs 10-15 more pounds. 5th year senior comes out mature but still is not ready to play for at least 1 year. He needs to strengthen up and learn the 5 technique, has potential but will remain to be seen if he can fulfill it
4-3 DT
Ndamukong Suh—Nebraska—6’4”-307-top 3—Suh is the best DT coming out in quite some time. He plays with elite strength and possesses Albert Haynesworth type ability. As opposed to Gerald McCoy, Suh will require a double team at most times, and he is the type of player you do not want to run at. He pushes the pocket and can man handle most guards. He will be a stalwart at DT and will anchor a defense for years to come
Gerald McCoy—Okla—6’4”-303—top 5—McCoy is an outstanding athlete for his size. He can penetrate as well as anyone at the position this decade. He has a quick first step and a tremendous ability to slash through the line and make plays in the back field on running backs and qbs. The reason he is behind Suh is because he will require a chip block, not a double team. If you are running the ball you want to run at McCoy because that takes away his slashing ability and his pursuit prowess. He will be an excellent player who will be very disruptive and likely put up better stats than Suh, however his playing style will not be as consistent or require the same attention in the form of manpower. Reminds me of Tommie Harris
Brian Price—UCLA-6’1”-301—1st to 2nd—Pac 10 defensive player of the year, he’s a football player, short arms not real tall, ideal DT in Tampa 2 scheme. Spent a ton of time in opponents backfields so is solid penetrator and actually has some pass rush moves. Whether his stubby arms will hinder those moves remains to be seen, but I think he will be a tremendous DT in the right scheme, I like him for the colts at 31, I think he is better than Peria Jerry and Ziggy Wood from last year
Lamarr Houston-Texas—6’3”-305—2nd –Came to Texas as a running back so has obvious athleticism, on tape he consistently faces double teams especially on passing plays which limits his big plays, on the film all I kept noticing was Sergio Kindle. Houston is a good player who certainly has some potential. He got a lot of respect in the Big 12 but I don’t see him as a real force. He should be a starter but not a real dynamic threat
Linval Joseph--ECU—6’4”-328—2nd day—Some people talk about him as a 3-4 NT but I see him as a longer interior player in a 4-3 the way Marcus Stroud is. Could definitely play with better leverage. Is a sure tackler when he finds himself in the opposing backfield. Good athlete especially for 328 he moves well laterally, he is more of a project but he has things you cant teach. Look for him in a system like the Titans
3-4 NT
Dan Williams—Tenn—6’2”-327—1st—The dude is stout, he’s compact and tough to control. Looks to be one of those guys that cant be taken care of by just a guard or center. I really like the flashes he shows in pass rush it makes him not just a Cody type run stuffer but a 3 down lineman. Very talented, not as good as B.J. Raji was coming out last year but he looks like a really good NT look for him to go real early with teams like Bills and Dolphins looking for a NT to be strong up the middle.
Terrence Cody—Alabama—6’4”—354—1st to 2nd—We all saw his fat ass at Bama. He was a one man wrecking crew that demanded 2 blockers at the point of attack. Would like to see better athleticism, but ppl insist he was dunking when he was closer to 370, so early in the 2nd round could be a strong guy to step in as a 2 down NT in a Keith tractor Traylor or Mount Washington mode
Cam Thomas—UNC—6’4-330—2nd day—Kind of a smaller Cody, not nearly the athlete Williams is but does have the size and strength to stuff the run. Has shown production in doing just that in college. Would be a good third round pick for the dolphins if they are unable to get Dan Williams in first. Will likely be a satisfactory NT, not a gameplan changer, much like Jason Ferguson
3-4 OLB
Sergio Kindle-Texas—6’3”-250—1st—Love him, love his length and especially his closing speed. When he sees the ball and gets his angle right he gets up on the ball carrier or qb in a hurry. Not a pass rusher but could be a decent blitzer. He is just a hair shorter than the pats ideal OLB with some measurements having him a quarter inch under 6’4” and his arms are not quite as long and his pass rush moves are really lacking, but he has great athleticism and when you look at the film the guy is everywhere making play after play, most of them in the backfield, Not a big sack guy but really an impact player who will make a lotta plays I like him a lot for the Pats or Dolphins
Jerry Hughes—TCU—6’2”-253—1st-2nd—A real good player, a high school running back who took a while to make it as an OLB but once he got there it was no turning back. Prob could go much earlier than expected by making an appearance in the 1st round. He is a real good speed rusher who’s game will transition to the pros well. I see him as a 8-10 sack guy, not Demarcus Ware, but could be an Anthony Spencer or a Joey Porter
If gets slotted in 3-4 scheme will need some time to transition so don’t expect real production til year 3,
Koa Misi-Utah—6’3”-251—2nd day—Looks a little small but you cant deny his motor and production, The guy has serious athletic ability and plays similar to Kindle. He has great lateral movement fluidity and great closing speed. I think he can be a real player. I’d like to see him put on a couple pounds but he uses his hands well and is probably as good a pass rusher as Kindle, although Kindle did it against Okung and Trent Williams and Misi did it against god knows who in the Mountain West.
Ricky Sapp—Clemson—6’4”-254—2nd day—Certainly looks the part in the Bill Parcells/Belichick OLB schemes. All the measurables and athleticism to make it work, not real strong in the pass rush skills but is an effective speed rusher, I really like him for the pats at the 53 pick. If we don’t get Kindle Sapp is my number 1 priority in round 2. Is a projection but his speed (4.7) and size makes him perfect for the teams that play taller de’s than steelers, could struggle setting the edge but is a good prospect
Thaddeus Gibson—OSU—6’2”-243—3rd round/day—Came out as a Junior and is getting lost among this talented group. Is exactly the type of guy who could sit for a year or two and truly be an impact pass rusher. He has the skills necessary to get to the qb so in a couple years look out for this guy unless he winds up somewhere like KC or Washington, might fit well in Packers scheme
Antonio Coleman--Auburn--6’2”-255- -3rd day to undrafted—good collegiate pass rusher, little short but could be situational rusher probably with his hand in the dirt, terrific college production 2x first team all sec DE
4-3 OLB
Sean Weatherspoon—Mizz—6’1”-240—1st-early 2nd—He is really a terrific player. Grossly athletic the guy will play the run and pass superbly, I believe he will be one of the best Will linebackers in the game and would be a great pickup for the Eagles Saints or Rams at 33. He makes all the big plays for Mizzou and his game is going to transition beautifully and quickly to the NFL
Daryl Washington—TCU—6’2”-230—1st-2nd—Real good player, a little slim but what a playmaker. The dude makes things happen and is one of the reasons Jerry Hughes did so well. He did everything for the TCU defense and was legit in the backfield and secondary. Will be a real good will and somebody is gonna be very pleased with him in the 2nd round. Its cuz of players like him that this draft is so deep, btw ridiculously long arms, will be an outstanding special teamer right away
Eric Norwood—S. Carolina—6’1”-245—2nd day—Jasper Brinkley came outta this defense last year and did pretty well for the vikes, now think that Norwood has been their best defender for the past 3 years, the guy is one of those guys that just puts it all together on the football field. Extremely durable was butkus finalist in 09 and 3 time first team all SEC. The guys loves to get after the quarterback and he’s good at it. Some think he could play any of the LB positions in a 3-4 but I think he could thrive in a 4-3 OLB role much like Orakpo did last year. This guy can flat out play football and that’s something that forgotten all too often, look for him to be more productive than his draft placement
Navarro Bowman—PSU—6’0”-243—2nd day—Short real athletic though. A sure tackler, has had some off the field issues. Has potential to be a bust but his athleticism makes him worthy of a 3rd but a reach to the second may be regretable
Perry Riley—LSU—6’1”-240—2-5 rounds—Butkus finalist in 2008, good athleticism could be a solid player, wont be dynamic, maybe a kawika Mitchell type, lacks speed to truly be a playmaker
A.J. Edds—Iowa—6’4”-246-2nd-3rd day—Good size will need to bulk up, intelligent and instinctive could play sam if gets bigger/stronger, longsnapper, not a pass rusher at all so not 3-4 olb, played for ferentz
Kavell Conner—Clem—6’0”-240—3rd day—Good athlete, straight line speed and above average lateral movement, probably a special teamer or spot start will at best
Rico McCoy—Tenn—6’1”-220—3rd day—very fast, size obviously an issue, is a playmaker in the tampa 2 but not an ultimate playmaker, good for covering te/rb’s but wont hold up against o-lineman.
ILB/MLB
Rolando McClain—Alabama—6’4”-255—Top 15—Consummate leader of a defense. He is a guy who makes plays and calls the shots. Not the speed of a Patrick Willis and might be best in a 3-4 scheme, but his intelligence, as praised by Nick Saban, makes him the premier ILB in this draft. He would be great for the Giants in filling Pierce’s shoes but I think he would be great for the Jags in a role Mike Peterson held for years. I like his athleticism, but will McClain its all about intelligence instincts and production, the man’s ready to be a pro day 1
Brandon Spikes—UF—6’3”-249—2nd day—If he came out last year prob a no brainer 1st round pick, he has immense leadership and playmaking qualities that made him the key defender on UF through its Tim Tebow era. His 5.0 40 scares ppl and leads them to believe he cant play on 3rd downs even tho the tape shows how good he was in coverage and how many plays he made in the passing game. I believe him to be a solid player and one of the few guys that can play the mike in this draft, good value after 45
Sean Lee—PSU—6’2”-236—2nd day—Didn’t play in 2009 but instead had an internship as a coach for the nittany lions. Is widely regarded as one of the smartest players in the draft and his athleticism is only a plus. He moves well and shows tremendous coverage ability. He is definitely smaller but adding bulk is the easiest thing to do in the pros, look for him to be taken in the Laurinitis range around 40
Joe Pawelek—Baylor—6’2”-235—3rd day to undrafted—Taller than measured, stiff player looks to play downhill with above average coverage skills, special teamer possible spot starter, not fluid
Reed Williams—WVU—6’2”-233—Undrafted—Too small too slow, maybe special teamer, fluid in coverage but not athletic enough
CB
Joe Haden—UF—5’11”-193—top 20—The guy is a down right baller, he absolutely gets in to and out of his breaks and backpedal better than anyone in the past 2 drafts. He is not afraid to tackle. Was a true freshman starter at UF for first time in god knows how long. Son of a strength and speed coach. His 4.4 time at his pro day saved his draft stock a lil. I like him in an off scheme like the pats run not a press scheme like the packers. Stronger than you think, and he’s only 20
Kyle Wilson—Boise—5’10”-194—1st—Jersey dude that made a name for himself at the senior bowl. Plays very tough and physical, probably most so in this class. Aint gonna pick a lotta balls off but will knock them down with authority and contact. More athletic than you think, reminds me of Dunta Robinson with his little fire and ability to break up passes
Kareem Jackson—Alabama—5’10”-196—1st to 2nd—Played under Nick Saban and was the teams best corner. Has been rising up draft boards recently which I believe is a mistake. He will be a good value in the 2nd but is a stretch in the first especially the other talent that will be available. He is one of the few NFL ready corners tho. Not outstanding athletic ability but definitely a smart player at the corner. Would be a great guy to plug into the broncos secondary
Devin McCourty—Rutgers—5’11”-193—prob 2nd—BB loves this dude, probably the best special team player in the draft and that includes the kickers. Isnt ready to play corner just yet but might be halfway thru the year. Guy has a knack for blocking kicks too. I like him I just do not ever see him being an elite #1 shutdown corner, but could be a more than starter on the outside
Patrick Robinson—FSU—5’11”-190—2nd day—Prob the most athletic of the bunch, he looks incredible in gym shorts, great hips and feet and burst the guy is the prototype. Difficulty when it comes to mirroring receivers and playing the ball. On the tape the guy is just not there yet. Great athletic ability and potential but he aint ready for at least a year, will be great gunner in the mean time
Perrish Cox—Ok St—5’11”-195—3rd day—Physical and plays ball hard, plays similar to Kyle Wilson. He has good return ability with good vision. Heres a guy who will play better than his draft position, a steal in the 3rd round
Jerome Murphy—USF—6’0”-196—2nd day—He has good length and plays physically, another cover 2 style corner for TB or GB and is a better player than ppl are talking about. If put in right system he will be one of the steals from this position. I like Cox better but Murphy has some skills. His slowness with change of direction is going to hurt him in off coverage systems especially manning up on ppl
Chris Cook—Virginia—6’2”-212—2nd day—Big dude for the cb position, I believe he will end up at safety, he is one of the few tweeners in this draft. His 4.46 speed also makes him intriguing. He reminds me of a Kenny Philips with the G-men. I think he could be a solid safety, he will need to loosen his hips tho
Brandon Ghee—Wake—6’0”-192—2nd day—Real good speed at combine for his size. Good at jamming ppl at the line. Played across from Alphonso Smith 2 years ago which helped. Would be a good fit for the packers trying to provide insurance behind Al Harris, could be a good Buc also, draft stock rising so I think he’s a 3rd round value but might get bumped to 2nd cuz 6 feet and 4.45 speed
Javier Arenas—Alabama—5’1”-197—3rd day/round—A really scary return guy at Bama, has the threat to score everytime he touches it. As a cb he has more skill than ppl give him credit for. He uses his athleticism well and plays the ball and run hard, I like him because even if he doesn’t pan out as a cb he will be a real be special teamer
Stefan Virgil—VT—5’10”-185—3rd day—Very physical almost in the Antoine Winfield mold, terrific special teams talent in blocking kicks, quick but not top end speed, maybe a nickel guy, good blitzing cb
Jamar Wall—TTU—5’10”-204—3rd Day—Good build, not a man to man corner, makes plays when looking at the QB, plays physical
Joshua Moore—KSU—5’11”-185—3rd day—Good physical player, slowish feet, lead team in tackles twice from corner, still has some redeemable coverage skills, played against many spread offenses
Brian Jackson—Okla—6’1”-202—3rd day—Good instincts and size, good athleticism and fluidity, could be a good player in the pros, might be a nice cb/s in a nickel set to cover a larger receiver
Devin Ross—Zona—5’10”-185—3rd day to undrafted—Good measurables, slow out of breaks in his backpedal, a little out of control flipping his hips, will likely be a gunner, not the skills to play in secondary
S
Eric Berry—Tenn—One of my favorite players in the draft. A guy I would be stunned if he were a bust. Tremendous athleticism-great great hips, could probably play cb but his playmaking ability, size and tackling make him an ideal safety in the current passing NFL. I would take him any time after 3 I could give a shit if your not supposed to do that for a FS. I think this is definitely the best safety class at the top end Ive ever seen. Berry is the man
Earl Thomas—Texas—1st—He is the type of player that grows on people. You hear ppl evaluate him as better than Berry cuz of his playmaking ability and I thought it was cuz of his 8 picks and that sometimes can be a misleading stat, but his tape is outstanding. The guy flys around at all times, he looks like Bob Sanders when people have the ball and he has the ability to fly to them and get them on the ground, but when the ball is in the air he’s all over it, great hands, instincts, I really really like him another guy I wanna know how he’s doing in 3 years, Michael Huff’s shitting the bed in the pros scares me though
Taylor Mays—USC—6’3”-230-1st-2nd—Measurables, Ive been following this dude since he was a frosh at USC and he’s still impressive running a 4.4 at that size. However I don’t know how he fits in the NFL. He doesn’t flip the hips fluidly or come out of his breaks like a 1st round safety should. He can be an absolutely dominant special teams player, and can be the most feared safety in the NFL, but it all depends on how things play out, I wouldn’t take him before pick 40.
Nate Allen—USF—6’0”-207—2nd day—A lot to like about him, team captain, high school qb, he is athletic and reads the offense well. Feels comfortable in zone and will be a FS in the pros. Good size good speed. He is a playmaker who is ok against the run with room to improve. I like him as a player and might give Mays a run for his money as the next safety off the board
Morgan Burnett—GT—6’1”—209—2nd day—definitely the 5th safety prospect in the draft. He has good measureables and was fairly productive. But a guy with his size speed has to do better. He plays the run well and is bigger than Allen and Thomas but not nearly as productive. A projection type player here
K
Brett Swanson--MSU—5’8”-175—Late—Weak class, soccer style dude who will struggle to make a roster
P
Brent Bowden—VT—6’2”-202—Late—The best prospect in the draft, but most teams just sign free agents
KR/PR
CJ Spiller--Clemson
Javier Arenas—Alabama
Brandon Banks—KSU—5’7”-150—3rd day—Will draw comparisons to Sproles, but he wasn’t as productive as Sproles. He’ll get a shot and looks like someone the bills would have returning kicks
Notes:
Receivers and running backs are really good at about 8-10 deep tremendous really look for a bunch to go in round 2 WR before RB’s
Sleepers: Charles Scott, Mardy Gilyard, Tony Washington, Eric Norwood, Antonio Coleman, James Starks, George Selvie,
Big Depth at WR, RB, OLB/DE, DT, less at CB but still solid
My ideals for pats to get at 22, 44, 47, 53:
Dez Bryant, Rob Gronkowski, Al Woods, Ricky Sapp
Jared Odrick, Rob Gronkowski, Brandon Lafell, Ricky Sapp
Sergio Kindle, Rob Gronkowski, Al Woods, Damien Williams
Jermaine Gresham, Brandon Lafell, Al Woods, Ricky Sapp
Al Woods could be a Tyson Alualu
Ricky Sapp could be a Koa Misi, Jerry Hughes
Brandon Lafell/Damien Williams/Mardy Gilyard, I don’t think Golden Tate will drop far enough
